Why a GP with NHS experience is the right choice

Joint injections require accurate diagnosis, precise anatomical knowledge, and sound clinical judgement. Injecting the wrong structure — or injecting without the right diagnosis — can be at best ineffective and at worst harmful.

Dr Hasham's 30-year NHS career means he has assessed and managed thousands of musculoskeletal presentations. He knows when an injection is appropriate, when physiotherapy or imaging should come first, and when referral to orthopaedics or rheumatology is the right decision.

Currently, all injections are performed using anatomical landmark technique — a well-established, evidence-based approach used throughout the NHS for the majority of joint and soft tissue injections.

Joint injection FAQs

Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly with Dr Hasham. If your condition requires specialist orthopaedic or rheumatological assessment, he will advise and refer appropriately.
Are the injections done with ultrasound?
Currently, Dr Hasham performs injections using anatomical landmark technique — the standard approach used throughout NHS practice. For most patients with a clear clinical diagnosis, this achieves excellent results.
How painful is the injection?
Most injections are well tolerated. A local anaesthetic is included in the injection mixture for most procedures. Patients commonly describe it as considerably more comfortable than expected.
How quickly will I feel relief?
The local anaesthetic provides immediate but short-lived relief. The corticosteroid effect builds over 48–72 hours and typically peaks at 1–2 weeks.
How long does the effect last?
This varies between patients and conditions. Many experience relief for 3–6 months. Underlying structural pathology and whether rehabilitation is undertaken affect duration.
Can I have more than one injection?
Most joints can be injected 2–3 times per year. Repeated injections are not recommended indefinitely and should be combined with rehabilitation to address the underlying cause.
Can I drive home after?
Yes, for most injections. If local anaesthetic is used near a nerve (e.g. carpal tunnel or shoulder), Dr Hasham will advise on timing.
I have diabetes — can I still have an injection?
Yes, but corticosteroid injections can temporarily raise blood glucose for 1–3 days. If you use insulin, monitor more closely. Dr Hasham will discuss this with you at assessment.
